Math at Hand - Grades 5 - 6
Description: This resource is designed to assist students and educators to quickly understand fundamental mathematical concepts, including mental math and estimation, decimals, fractions and percents, geometry and measurement, probability and statistics, and more. Through reading and teacher-guided mini-lessons, students develop their vocabulary, problem-solving abilities, and general understanding of mathematics. Each chapter in this handbook explores a mathematics strand through brief overviews of the main topics, step-by-step procedures for problem-solving, real-life examples, curious facts, and a variety of visual aids. Appendixes include an Almanac with test-prep strategies and study tips, and a Yellow Pages section with an illustrated glossary of math terms. A Spanish softcover handbook is also available.
Reviewers' Notes: An excellent enrichment piece for students who enjoy reading and trying out activities independently, as well as a strong intervention resource for those who need help with math. Line staff can use it as a quick reference tool to support students with homework or conceptual development of math skills, as well as to deepen their own mathematics expertise.
