After School Content Literacy Project for California, The
Description: This resource offers professional development designed to introduce the theory and practical application of 13 research-based literacy strategies to after school staff. What are the best ways to teach comprehension in after school? The literacy modules in this kit explain why comprehension is "the essence of the reading process," provide tips for delivering effective staff workshops, and present the following interactive strategies: anticipation guides, directed reading-thinking activity, establishing purpose, foldables, graphic organizers, interactive read alouds, know/want to know/learned (KWL), learning logs, list-group-label, question-answer relationships, role/audience/format/topic (RAFT) writing, semantic mapping, and think alouds. These techniques can be immediately applied to assist students with homework, tutoring, or large-group settings offering academic enrichment. Each module can be delivered to staff in 30 minutes or less, and includes a PowerPoint presentation and accompanying video demonstrating the strategies in after school programs. Materials for participants are included.
Reviewers' Notes: Sophisticated literacy activities take practice and refinement. To assist staff with implementation, trainers should set short- and long-term goals to allow participants to improve their use of the literacy strategies presented in this resource. Staff members should try the reading method once after each workshop, and then engage in discussion with their peers. Peer coaching and support from site supervisors is also highly encouraged for best results.
